Flavor Description
Meru Kenyas are known for gentleness: blackberry and brown sugar on the dry aroma, ripe berry and a tomato-like savory-sweet acidity on entry, black tea and caramel through the middle, and a full, juicy body with a sweet finish. Acidity is noticeably lower than in Nyeri or Kirinyaga, and a medium roast shows the sweetness best.
Buying Tips
- Region: Meru sits on the northeastern slopes of Mt. Kenya and is made up of many cooperative factories, with a gentler style than the central regions
- Varieties: Mainly classic SL-28 and SL-34, mixed with the disease-resistant Ruiru 11
- Roast: Light roasts lean bright berry; medium roasts turn toward brown sugar and black tea, ideal for drinkers who avoid high acidity
Brewing Notes
- Pour-over: Medium grind, 90–91°C, ratio 1:15
- French press: For medium roasts, a 4-minute steep combines berry sweetness with a full body
