Mt. Elgon's volcanic soils make this Kenya sweeter and rounder than the central regions: red plum and orange on entry, caramel and cocoa through the middle, present but smooth acidity, a medium-full body, and a milk-chocolate finish.
Buying Tips
Background: Mt. Elgon straddles the Kenya–Uganda border; on the Kenyan side, areas such as Bungoma are farmed mainly by smallholders
Good for: A gentle introduction for anyone curious about Kenya but wary of high acidity
Labelling: Bags may say Mt. Elgon, Bungoma, or "Western Kenya"
Brewing Notes
Batch brewer: Medium grind, ratio 1:16; very consistent
Pour-over: 90°C at 1:15 for the best sweet-tart balance
