Coffee-to-Water Ratio Guide for Beginners
Not sure how much coffee or water to use? This guide explains the most practical coffee-to-water ratios for beginners so you can quickly find a balanced starting point.
Coffee-to-Water Ratio Guide
Ratio means how many grams of water you use for each gram of coffee. It controls brew strength and is one of the best variables for beginners to keep stable.
The Most Useful Starting Ratios
- Standard pour-over range: 1:15 to 1:17
- Best beginner starting point: 1:16
- Stronger: 1:15
- Lighter: 1:17
Ready-to-Use Examples
| Coffee | Water | Ratio | | 15g | 240g | 1:16 | | 18g | 288g | 1:16 | | 20g | 300g | 1:15 | | 20g | 340g | 1:17 |
When to Go Stronger or Lighter
- Too weak, too thin, not enough presence: use more coffee or less water
- Too heavy, too thick, muddy finish: use less coffee or more water
Common Ratios by Brew Method
- Pour over: 1:15 to 1:17
- French press: 1:14 to 1:16
- AeroPress: wide range, but 1:15 is a safe start
- Cold brew: often stronger for concentrate; drink-ready recipes commonly fall around 1:12 to 1:15
The Best Beginner Approach
Start with
1:16 and brew the same recipe three times. If it tastes weak, move toward 1:15. If it feels too heavy, move toward 1:17. Avoid changing ratio, grind size, and temperature all at once.
