Your First Pour Over Recipe: A Stable Beginner Setup
When you are starting pour over, what you need most is not endless theory but a recipe that actually works. This guide gives beginners a stable starter recipe they can follow immediately.
Your First Pour Over Recipe
If you are just learning pour over, do not chase complicated techniques yet. What you need first is a recipe that is
stable, repeatable, and easy to understand.
Recommended Starter Setup
- Coffee: 15g
- Water: 240g
- Ratio: 1:16
- Grind: medium-fine
- Water temperature: 92–93°C
- Total time: 2:30 to 3:00
Brewing Steps
- Rinse the filter with hot water and preheat the dripper and server
- Add 15g of coffee and level the bed
- Pour 30g of water for a 30-second bloom
- Second pour to 120g
- Third pour to 180g
- Final pour to 240g and let it drain
Why This Recipe Works for Beginners
- 15g is easy to weigh
- 240g gives you one practical cup
- 1:16 is a very stable balance point
- Three main pours keep the workflow simple
Which Beans Fit Best?
- Medium-light to medium roasts
- Washed or honey processed coffees
- Colombia, Brazil, and Guatemala are all good starting points
Very light roasts or highly fermented coffees are harder to dial in at the beginning.
How to Adjust
- Too sour: grind finer or raise temperature to 94°C
- Too bitter: grind coarser or lower temperature to 91°C
- Too weak: move toward 1:15
- Too heavy: move toward 1:17
Once this recipe becomes stable, then it makes sense to experiment with pour speed, pulse timing, and dripper differences.
