Colombia Cultivar

The Colombia cultivar was developed to combat leaf rust, combining Caturra's high yield with Timor Hybrid's disease resistance.

A Product of Science and Agriculture

Variedad Colombia was developed by Colombia's National Coffee Research Center (Cenicafé) and released in 1982. The following year, coffee leaf rust was detected in Colombia for the first time, and this variety helped the industry weather the crisis.

Genetic Background

Colombia descends from Caturra and the Timor Hybrid. The Timor Hybrid, discovered in East Timor in the 1920s, is a natural cross between Arabica and Robusta that carries Robusta's disease resistance while remaining an Arabica. Colombia is a "composite variety": a blend of several lines with different sources of resistance. This makes it harder for leaf rust to overcome every plant at once, so resistance lasts longer.

Later Developments

As leaf rust kept evolving, Cenicafé released new resistant varieties:
  • Castillo: released in 2005, now one of Colombia's most widely planted varieties
  • Tabi: combining Typica, Bourbon and Timor Hybrid, known for better flavor
  • Cenicafé 1: a new-generation resistant variety released in 2016

Flavor Profile

Early resistant varieties were often seen as inferior in the cup, but after repeated selection, modern Colombia shows solid specialty qualities:
  • Classic flavors: chocolate, nuts and rich caramel
  • Fruit acidity: attractive cherry or berry acidity with the right roast
  • Complexity: suitable as a quality single origin or blend base
In cupping, growing environment and processing often matter more than whether a variety is "rust-resistant."

Growing Information

  • Disease resistance: excellent, especially against leaf rust
  • Yield: very high, an important choice for Colombian farmers
  • Altitude: 1,200–1,800 m
  • Stature: mostly compact, suited to dense planting

Brewing Tips

Colombia suits medium-light to medium roasts. For pour-over, try 91–93°C water and a 1:15 ratio to balance caramel and red fruit; at medium roast it makes espresso with dependable chocolate notes.
