Mundo Novo

Mundo Novo is a natural Typica-Bourbon hybrid known for exceptional yield and consistent quality, the backbone of Brazil's coffee industry.

History

Mundo Novo was discovered in the 1940s in the town of Mundo Novo (now Urupês) in São Paulo state, Brazil. It is a natural cross between the Typica-lineage "Sumatra" variety and Red Bourbon, combining the strengths of both. Brazil's Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) then selected it and began distributing it in the 1950s.

Impact on Brazilian Coffee

Mundo Novo's vigor and high yields quickly made it one of Brazil's most widely planted varieties, helping cement Brazil's position as the world's largest producer. It is also a parent of other important varieties:
  • Catuaí: Mundo Novo × Caturra, combining Mundo Novo's vigor with Caturra's compact form
  • Acaiá: a large-bean selection from Mundo Novo

Flavor Profile

Mundo Novo is known for steady, balanced flavor:
  • Chocolate: rich milk chocolate and cocoa
  • Nuts: warm roasted hazelnut and peanut
  • Low acidity: gentle and never sharp
  • High sweetness: pronounced caramel and brown sugar
  • Full body: round and rich

Growing Information

  • Altitude: 1,000–1,700 m
  • Yield: very high; one of Brazil's most widely planted varieties
  • Disease resistance: medium; still susceptible to leaf rust
  • Key traits: tall (over 3 m), adaptable, with steady quality even at lower altitudes; ripens late

Main Origins

Brazil is the main origin, especially Minas Gerais and São Paulo, with small plantings elsewhere in Latin America.

Brewing Tips

Mundo Novo is an ideal espresso blend base. At medium to medium-dark roasts it pulls sweet, chocolatey, nutty shots that are excellent with milk; a French press shows off its round, full body.
