Parainema

Parainema, developed by Honduras's IHCAFE, is one of the few Arabica varieties with broad-spectrum resistance to leaf rust, Coffee Berry Disease, and nematodes — while still delivering excellent cup quality.

Breeding History

Parainema was developed by the Instituto Hondureño del Café (IHCAFE) and officially released in the early 2000s. It is a cross between T5296 (a selection of the Timor Hybrid) and Villa Sarchi. T5296 carries broad-spectrum disease resistance genes inherited from *Coffea canephora* through the Timor Hybrid, while Villa Sarchi contributes flavor quality and dwarfism (World Coffee Research Variety Catalog, 2021; IHCAFE official technical documentation).

Disease Resistance (Scientific Basis)

The WCR Variety Catalog explicitly records Parainema's resistance to:
  • Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR): resistant to physiological races I, II, III, and XV
  • Coffee Berry Disease (CBD): *Colletotrichum kahawae* major strains
  • Root-knot nematodes: *Meloidogyne* spp. (*M. exigua*, *M. incognita*)
This multi-disease resistance profile makes it a critical outcome of Central American agricultural breeding under climate change pressure.

Flavor Profile

WCR cupping assessments rate Parainema as "Good" quality. In the specialty grade range, it shows:
  • Caramel sweetness: pronounced caramel and brown sugar undertones
  • Citrus acidity: brighter and cleaner than typical Timor Hybrid derivatives
  • Nutty character: warm hazelnut and almond baseline
  • Medium body: satisfying, textured mouthfeel
  • Clean finish: free of the herbal or earthy off-notes often associated with Timor Hybrid lineages

Agronomic Profile

Based on IHCAFE field trials and WCR data:
  • Altitude: 1,000–1,600m (broad adaptability; performs well even at mid-to-lower elevations)
  • Disease resistance: very high (multi-resistant to CLR races, CBD, and nematodes)
  • Yield: high
  • Tree height: medium — manageable for most farm conditions

Agricultural Significance for Honduras

Honduras is one of Central America's largest coffee exporters, with an agricultural system long threatened by leaf rust and berry disease. The wide promotion of Parainema represents IHCAFE's landmark achievement in balancing disease resistance with cup quality, and it is one of the varieties actively recommended by PROMECAFE (the Central American and Panama Coffee Promotion Program).
