Maracaturra
Maracaturra is a Maragogype × Caturra hybrid combining elephant-bean size with Caturra's lively acidity — one of Nicaragua's signature specialty varieties.
Origin and Breeding Background
Maracaturra is a cross between Maragogype (♀) and Caturra (♂), first identified and promoted by farmers in Nicaragua. The World Coffee Research (WCR) Variety Catalog classifies it as a naturally occurring or farmer-selected hybrid originating in Central America, with Nicaragua as its primary cultivation and promotion center (WCR Variety Catalog, 2021).
Morphological Characteristics
- Bean size: exceptionally large, approaching parent Maragogype — approximately 1.5–2× standard Arabica
- Tree size: more compact than Maragogype, easier to manage
- Fruit color: deep red at maturity
Flavor Profile
WCR cupping reports indicate that Maracaturra can display excellent specialty flavors at high altitude:
- Bright acidity: lively citrus and apple notes inherited from Caturra
- Florals: delicate jasmine and orange-blossom character
- Tropical fruit: mango, pineapple, and passion-fruit juiciness
- Medium to high sweetness: rich sucrose character and honey in the finish
- High cleanliness: outstanding cup clarity under washed processing
Agronomic Profile
Based on WCR Variety Catalog and PROMECAFE field trial data:
- Altitude: 1,200–1,800m (high altitude required to fully express flavor)
- Disease resistance: low (highly susceptible to Coffee Leaf Rust / CLR and Coffee Berry Disease / CBD)
- Yield: medium (better than Maragogype, lower than Caturra)
- Management: requires adequate fertilization and shade; environmentally demanding
Competition Record
Maracaturra has won multiple awards at Nicaragua's Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition. Its distinctive bean size and exceptional cup quality make it a showcase variety of choice for many estates.
