Australia

A rare non-traditional region using high-tech mechanical harvesting. A long growing cycle creates low acidity, high sweetness, and naturally lower caffeine.

Where Technology Meets Nature

Australia grows very little coffee — nowhere near enough for its huge café market — but it is a distinctive origin. Coffee was grown in Queensland in the late 19th century but faded because of high labor costs, only re-emerging in the 1980s once mechanical harvesting became viable.

Growing Far from the Equator

Australia's coffee regions lie mainly on the Atherton Tableland in far north Queensland and in the Northern Rivers region of northern New South Wales. At higher latitudes, even 200–500 m elevations stay relatively cool, so cherries ripen slowly and build more sugar.

Farming Characteristics

  • Mechanical harvesting: large harvesters pick ripe fruit, overcoming high labor costs and making coffee viable in a high-cost economy
  • Flat terrain: most farms are flat enough for machinery
  • Lower disease pressure: Australia has long been free of major diseases such as coffee leaf rust, so pesticide use is relatively low
  • High traceability: mostly family farms where one family often handles growing, processing and roasting

Major Growing Regions

Atherton Tableland (Queensland)

Australia's largest coffee region, with a tropical highland climate and fertile volcanic soils; Catuaí and K7 are common varieties.

Northern Rivers (New South Wales)

A subtropical area around Byron Bay and one of the highest-latitude coffee regions in the world, producing mild, sweet cups.

Processing Methods

  • Washed: the most common method
  • Natural and extended fermentation: tried by some farms in recent years to broaden the flavor range

Flavor Profile

  • A rich chocolate base
  • Roasted hazelnut and walnut
  • Very low acidity
  • A smooth, sweet cup

Brewing Tips

Low in acidity and high in sweetness, Australian coffee makes excellent medium-roast espresso or flat whites. For pour-over, use 90–92°C water to show off its gentle chocolate and nuts. With such small production, most of it is sold within Australia or by a handful of specialist roasters.
