Ecuador
Straddling the equator, Ecuador offers unique geography and microclimates, recently stunning the industry with high-quality Geisha and diverse experimental lots.
Equatorial Terroir Diversity
Ecuador is literally named after the equator. The Andes run the length of the country, creating dramatic elevation changes — from lowland rainforest to high cloud forest — within short distances, giving this small nation a remarkable range of microclimates. Steady year-round daylight at the equator lets high-altitude coffee ripen slowly, developing bright acidity and rich aromatics.
Arabica and Robusta Side by Side
Ecuador grows both species. Robusta is planted in the coastal lowlands and the Amazon and has long supplied the domestic instant-coffee industry, while specialty Arabica is concentrated in the highlands of the south and north. Interestingly, Ecuador's soluble-coffee capacity exceeds its own green production, so the country also imports green coffee.
Major Growing Regions
Loja
In the south, Ecuador's best-known specialty region, with farms above 2,000 m. Smallholders and estates here have won numerous international competitions and led the country's move into specialty.
Pichincha
North of the capital Quito, including areas such as Nanegal. Its cool, humid cloud forests have produced many high-quality Geisha and Sidra lots in recent years.
Zamora-Chinchipe
A southern region near the Peruvian border, often showing sweet red fruit and chocolate notes.
Signature Varieties
- Sidra: closely associated with Ecuador, prized for florals, black tea and tropical fruit, and a regular on the World Barista Championship stage
- Typica Mejorado: widely planted in Ecuador, clean and sweet
- Geisha: the star of high-altitude estates
Flavor Profile
- Vivid tropical fruit aromas (mango, passion fruit, pineapple)
- Complex balance of acidity and sweetness
- High floral intensity, especially in Geisha and Sidra
- Silky texture with a black-tea-like finish
Brewing Tips
Most Ecuadorian specialty lots suit light to medium-light roasts. Brew as pour-over or with a Clever Dripper at 92–95°C to show off the florals and tropical fruit; natural lots make outstanding iced pour-overs with a pronounced juicy character.
